017 On the West Side of the lower Square, and Opposite to the Grand Battery, is Situated the Palace, which is the Chief Ornament of the Castle. It is a Stately Structure, three Storeys high, and built in a Singular Style of Architecture, emblematic figures Standing on the Wreathed balustrade Pillars on Pedestals supported by grotesque figures, under something like gothic Arches And impediments of the Windows; it was built during the reign of James V and is in the form of a Square with a Small Court in the middle, where the King's Lions are said to have been kept, and is Still known by the name of the "Lions Den". The ground Storey of the Palace is now converted into a Canteen, Storehouses etc and the upper Storeys are Occupied as Soldiers Quarters.

017 On the South Side of the Palace is Situated "The Prince's Walk", a high Parapet which is ascended from the lower Square by a flight of Stone Steps, and Overlooks the Fort Major's Garden. So Called it is Said, from its being the favourite Promenade of James VI when a Child.
