| Union Canal (Continued) | 030.10 | [continued from page 34] X Port-Hopetoun basin at Edinburgh and extends to Port-Downie near Falkirk, where it joins the Forth and Clyde Canal, by which the communication is carried on to Glasgow. From Port-Hopetoun to Port-Downie, the distance is 31½ miles the length being caused by sinuosities in the line which were adopted to retain the level and avoid the additional expense and delay at lockage. It passes westwards through part of the Counties of Edinburgh, Linlithgow and Stirling, embracing the beautiful and populous Country in its route as well as the towns of Linlithgow and Falkirk. The parishes in the County of Edinburgh, through which the line is carried, are St. Cuthbert, Colinton, Currie, Ratho, and part of Kirkliston; in Linlithgow Shire, those of Uphall, part of Kirkliston, Dalmeny, Abercorn and Linlithgow; and in Stirlingshire those of Muiravonside, Polmont and Falkirk. For about 10 miles from Edinburgh the course of the line is westerly, but then it makes a long sweep to the north after which its direction again changes, and it makes a varied, though, in general, a north-west course, till it termination Continued * [continued on page 36] |
