009.13 | A wooded eminence supposed to have been a fortification made by the Caledonians. It is situated on the west bank of the Cuthbertston Burn, at the point where it emerges from the high ground into the plain below, the hill is of considerable elevation perhaps 200 feet, and flat & circular on the top, & would command an extensive view to the North East and West, but for its woody character. On this hill too it is supposed the Old Church stood, which was dedicated to St Mauvais, who is the tutelary Saint of this Parish, and the hill is frequently called the Kirk Hill on this account, but there are no records of this being the case it is merely Traditional. A little to the S.E. [South East] of Kier Hill there was formerly a well dedicated to St Mauvais but it has been covered up & its water supply a cattle trough a little lower down. |

This patriotic and brave man and his followers were in possession of the Keir Hill, from whence they sallied forth
and attacked, and put to flight the English, who were stationed in the Peel.
