020.08 | A small village situated near the centre of the parish of the same name. It is irregularly built, the houses being a good deal scattered, chiefly one storey, nearly all slated, and in good repair. It contains the parochial Church, Manse & School; a Free Church and Manse; one inn, a post office, a monument, erected to the memory of George Buchanan; four small grocer shops; three carpenter shops, and a smithy. It is intersected by a turnpike road, on which, in the north side of the village, is a toll at which whole rates are leviable. The inhabitants are principally agricultural laborers. |
