Falkirk, a parliamentary burgh, the Capital of the Eastern part of Stirlingshire, and a town of considerable importance, is situated in 55° 49' North latitude, and 3° 44' longtitude West from Greenwich, 11 Miles East of Stirling, 24 East by North of Glasgow and 24 West of Edinburgh. It stands as to its main body on a gently rising ground, dotted round in its environs with neat and beautiful villas, and sending off in different directions two elongated and thin suburbs; seen from the soft eminences to the North and North West, it presents with its fine spire and its thick grouping of buildings, a beautiful foreground to the brilliant and fascinating landscape over which it presides, but when entered, the town is far from being in general of a pleasing aspect. An utter want of uniformity or neatness or tastefulness in its buildings; the absence of all spaciousness and plan in the arrangement of its streets, and a deficiency in the indications of enterprise and refinement in the number or architecture of its public edifices, depreciate it as a town, far below the importance which belongs to it as a market, and as the seat of a great population. Its High Street or Main Street is over most of its length or half a mile from east to west; wide and airy; and has in its wide parts large houses and good shops, and

and about its middle sends back in one side a recess in which stands the spire, but even this is uniform in nothing; mean in some of its edifices; constantly changeful in its breadth, and destitute of the trivial grace of straightness. Over nearly half of its length from a little west of its middle, eastward; the sides of this street are subtended by mimic crowds of tiny streets which pressing in upon it at various angles of junction, or of divergency from parallelism, though they do give the town an extreme breadth of not more than 300 yards; occasion more serious perplexity to a stranger than he feels in two thirds of the far spreading New Town of Edinburgh. But the town properly viewed is quite as remarkable for the strangling extension of its limbs away among Cornfields and an open agricultural territory, as for the squeezing up of its main body within oriental street limits. Both the east and west ends of its High Street are in fact solitary street lines, which look as if they were wandering away from the town with which they communicate. Another thoroughfare called Kerse Lane after being reach by angular turnings or irregular debouchings through the north wing of the town straggles away in utter loneliness upwards of a quarter of a mile on the road to Grangemouth. But more surprising than all a thoroughfare leading due north from High Street runs onward for 1¼ miles 3½ times the length of the body or Compact part of the town and 6 times its breadth, this enormous elongation Consists of a Continuous street, forming the suburban districts of Grahamston & Bainsford

Falkirk is not in the strict sense a manufacturing town. Its grand importance consists subordinately in its being the depot of the internal trade for a considerable circumjacent district and primely in its having great fairs or "trysts" the greatest in Scotland and probably the greatest in Great Britain, for the Exposure and sale of black Cattle, sheep, and horses. - The trysts are held thrice a year on the 2nd Tuesday of August, the 2nd Monday of September, and the 2nd Monday of October, and following days generally for 3 days at a time. Upwards of 150,000 sheep and an equal number of black Cattle are brought to the Octr [October] tryst annually, and it is estimated that at least 300,000 head of Cattle and an equal (if not greater) number of sheep are brought for sale to the various trysts throughout the year. - The ground on which the trysts are held is about 3 miles to the N.W. [North West] of the town near the village of Stenhousemuir, and in the parish of Larbert.
Falkirk is a town of considerable antiquity and the site of one of those military stations on the Roman Wall known by the name of the forts of Agricola, - hence a number of the relics of the Roman people have been found from time to time in that place and the neighbourhood. - The Roman Wall built by the Emperor Antoninus Pius and now known by the appellation of Graham's Dyke passed through the S.E. [South East] portion of the town but no vestiges of it are extant except in Callendar Park where it is wonderfully perfect after the lapse of so many Centuries.
Falkirk was erected into a burgh of regality in 1393 by Robert III. It became the property of the Livingstone family subsequent to the Reformation.

Reformation and in 1600 James 1st granted a Charter by which it became entitled to the privileges of other free burghs viz: of Creating burgesses, holding weekly markets, electing baillies, &c. &c. In 1646 a charter was obtained from the Crown & ratified by Parliament in 1647 which considerably extended the privileges of the town, but the ratification is now lost. The Superiority remained in the Livingstone family till the attainder in 1715 of the Earl of Linlithgow, it subsequently passed into the hands of Mr. Forbes of Callendar House whose descendant, William Forbes Esq. is at present the feudal superior.
By the Act 3 and 4 William the 4th Chap. [Chapter] 77 the town of Falkirk has obtained a municipal Constitution. The Council consists of 12 - viz. A Provost 3 bailies a treasurer and 7 Councillors. There is no local statue providing for the police of the town and it has not yet thought fit to take advantage of the General Police Act passed last year (1858). There are 3 Police Constables appointed by the Sheriff of the Co: [County] and a Sheriff substitute and the Procurator Fiscal for the eastern district of Stirlingshire reside in Falkirk.
The population of Falkirk including the suburban districts of Grahamston and Bainsford which are comprehended within the parliamentary boundary is about 8,904 ad it unites with Linlithgow Hamilton Lanark and Airdrie in returning a Member to Parliament.

Campfield
(Site of the Battle of Falkirk)
A.D. 1298
"Instantly on Edwards arrival in England he assembled a numerous Army
amounting according to the common accounts, to above eighty thousand foot
besides a fine body of Cavalry, most of them veteran troops newly brought over from France. He marched
northward at their head. The Scots were, meanwile, making vigorous preparations for defence. An army
of thirty thousand, collected by Wallace and other chiefs, rendezvoused near Falkirk, waiting for the enemy.
After being encamped for about a month at Kirkliston, two miles south of Queensferry: the scarcity of
provisions had become so great in Edward's army that he had thoughts of returning to Edinburgh, but
receiving intelligence that the Scottish army had taken post within six leagues of his Camp he resolved
to attempt a decisive strike. Setting out, accordingly, from Kirkliston at three in the afternoon, they arrived
at Linlithgow that evening. The army including the King, lay all night on the bare ground. He mounted
at daybreak, and led the army through the town. They had no sooner passed the town of Linlithgow than
they descried, on the hills of Muiravenside several bodies of armed men whom they took for the Scottish Army. They
marched up in battle array to attack them. Upon their arrival, it was found that the Scots had retired, having
been only the outposts, and scouting parties, who upon the approach of the enemy had fallen back
to the main body at Falkirk. Reaching the summit of the hills, the whole English army halted, till the Bishop of
Durham had said Mass. It was the 22nd of July, and St. Magdalen's day. They now observed the Scottish army
two miles off, forming in the order of Battle upon a gentle eminence near Falkirk. When Mass was ended, the King
proposed that the army should take some refreshment. The troops however would listen to no delay,
but insisted on being led to action. The English advanced to the charge in three great bodies. The first
was led by the Earl Marshal, and the Earls of Hereford & Lincoln; the second by the Bishop of Durham, with whom
Sir Ralph Basset de Drayton was joined command; and the third which was probably intended as a corps de
reserve, was commanded by Edward in person. The Scottish army also stood in three divisions, commanded
by as many leaders. The first line of the English, led on by the Earl Marshal, and the Earls of Hereford
and Lincoln, advanced with great ardour, but not having reconnoitred the ground, were some-
what retarded by the morass in front of the Scotts. Turning a little to the left, however, they found firm
ground, along which they charged. The Bishop of Durham, who with Sir Ralph Basset commanded the
second line, perceiving the morass, turned to the right and set a compass, but more nearly inspecting
the warlike posture of the Scotts, he proposed to stop until the third division commanded by the
King had advanced. Delay however did not suit Basset's ardour who insisted that the troops
should instantly charge; They advanced accordingly, and charged the left wing of the Scots
almost at the moment Bigod had charged the right.
The Scots made so brave a resistance, that the English Cavalry who were now chiefly employed
could not for some time, make any impression upon their ranks. The division commanded
by Stewart was surrounded and, after a gallant defence, mostly cut to pieces, together
with their leader who was mortally wounded. Wallace for some time, stood his ground
against the whole power of the enemy with amazing intrepidity till Robert Bruce, who with
a body of Cavalry, had taken a circuit round a hill was ready to fall upon his rear.
This obliged him to begin a retreat, which he accomplished with great valour and
military skill to the Carron. He crossed the river in view of the victorious army
at a ford near Arthurs Oven.

Those infected were confined to their houses by Command of the Kirk Session, and were not allowed to have any intercourse with their neighbours. The dead were interred in Graham's Muir, on the north side of the town, each grave being covered with a flat stone, & the whole were enclosed with a stone wall. The relics were removed about 50 years ago, by the then Occupier of the field," New Stat. Acc. [Statistical Account] of Scotland.

[Continuation of Name as Written:]
Constructed by Lollius Urbicus
A.D. 140
(Roman Legions II, VI, and XX)
Extract from Roy's Military Antiquites respecting the above wall.
"The first wall was raised by the emperor Hadrian along the line of the
nearest chain of forts, in the year 120. The second was executed
by Lollius Urbicus, in the reign of Antoninus, along the farthest chain of forts, in
the year 140." (This is the wall referred to in this page) "In the Britannia Romana
is given a very full and accurate detail of all the inscriptions that had then
been discovered along the course of the wall; whence it appears that no more
than three legions; the second, surnamed Augusta ; the sixth, Victrix, and
the twentieth, Volans victrix, had any concern in the execution of that
public work". |

[continued from page 47]
"What is commonly called the Wall, Consisted of a ditch or Vallum, having a Wall on the South, which was formed of the earth thrown out in digging the ditch, Stones with inscriptions have been dug up in various parts of it, which throw light on its history, Several of which are in the College of Glasgow. Traces of the ditch are to be seen in various places Eastward from Castlecary, And Also in the grounds of Mr Forbes and Mr Hagart. It is particularly conspicuous in Callendar Park and Laurieston. About a mile East of that village it enters the parish of Polmont." New Stat. [Statistical] Account of Scotland.
The portion of Wall in Callendar Park is very Conspicuous, And is well Known by every person in the locality, it is also Known as "Grahams Dyke." from the Britons, under Graham or Grime, having broken through it in this Parish near Elf Hill. Its present appearance is similar to a deep ravine with Sloping Banks Somewhat Similar to a deep Cutting on a Railway, it is thickly planted with Trees; the South Side is Steeper than the north Side And Slopes at About an Angle of 50°. |

The situation of the Old Jail or Tolbooth of Falkirk was identical with the position of the Steeple and Lock up. it seems to have been a very small building and utterly inadequate to the requirements of the town even when Considerably less populous than at present It appears to have been erected subsequent to the granting of the Charter in 1646 and Continued to be used as a prison till the end of last Century when it was allowed to go to ruin.
There is no part of the original building remaining at present. |

A small stream which collects about Parkfoot, and, running nearly due west, joins the West Burn at the farm of Burnhead. Originally it took its rise, and received its name from a pond situated in Callander Park called "The Gote", and, in some of the ancient title-deeds, the proprietors were granted the liberty to fish therein. The pond is now drained, and the supply being thus cut off from the stream, it assumes the character of a drain. |
