Falkirk appears to have been a town of some note in the 11th. Century. The origin and etymology of the name are involved in much obscurity. The town is supposed to have been at one time denominated Ecclesbrae, or the Church on the Brow, as descriptive of its situation. In the Gaelic language it is called Eglais bhris, or the fallen church, and sometimes Eglais bhrec, signifying the spotted church. The name last mentioned has been translated Vario Sacello, and as such appears in charters of a comparatively recent date, supposed to have arisen from the colour of the stones used in the building, or from the different kinds of Architecture of which it is composed. Another supposition is, that the present name is formed of the Latin word vallum, and the Saxon, kirk, originating in the circumstance, that the church stands on or near the line of the ancient wall of Antoninus.
The parish of Falkirk is situated in the eastern division of the County of Stirling, is separated from the Frith of Forth by a small part of the parish of Polmont, and extends 'about 9 miles in length, and from 2 to 5 in breadth. It is bounded on the east,

by the parishes of Polmont and Muiravonside; on the south, by Muiravonside and Slamannan; on the west, by Cumbernauld and Denny; and on the north, by the river Carron, which divides it from Dunipace, Larbert, and Bothkennar. The course of the Carron, however, having, many years ago, in several places, been altered, some parts of this parish are now on the northern side; and certain small parts of the parishes of Larbert and Bothkennar are on the southern, or Falkirk side of the river.
Situated on the boundary betwixt the Roman possessions on the south, and those of Caledonia on the north, many sanguinary encounters took place in Ancient times in this parish. Among these, there was one in the year 415, In which Robert Graham, a commander under King Fergus II., fell, while repelling the Roman forces; and from this event the Wall of Antoninus, originally formed in A.D. 140, is supposed to have received the appellation, which it bears to this day, of Graham's Dyke. From the inscription upon a slab of marble found at taking down the old church in 1810, it appears that Graham was buried in the adjoining church-yard.
On the north of the town, and near to where the village of Grahamston now stands, a battle was fought on 22nd. July 1298, between the forces of Edward I. of England, and the Scots, led on by the patriotic and undaunted William Wallace. The attack on each side was violent, but, overpowered by superior numbers, the Scots retreated, and, crossing the river Carron, marched northward. In this battle Sir John Graham of Dundaff and Sir John Stewart of Bonkill, commanders in the Scottish army, were slain, and were both interred in the church-yard, where their grave-stones are still to be seen. In the reign of James III. the town was for some time occupied by the army of the discontented Lords, who had risen in rebellion against that monarch. His Majesty intended to have attacked them there. They, however, anticipated his purpose, and met him at Sauchie burn, near Stirling, where the conflict took place, which terminated in his defeat and death. While Queen Mary was yet infant, Henry VIII. cherished the hope of subjugating Scotland by her union in marriage with his son Edward. The Earl of Arran, then Regent favoured the scheme; but Cardinal Beaton and the Earl of Murray were its determined opponents. These personages agreed to have a meeting at Falkirk on 4th. September 1543; and at Callendar House a treaty was signed, which put an end to the proposal. This celebrated but unfortunate Sovereign appears to have been on intimate footing with the family of Callendar. On the 12th. of August 1562, she dined there with a part of her train, on her way to the north; and on 1st. July 1565, she stood godmother to the infant Baron of Callendar, son of William, Sixth Lord Livingstone. She slept at Callendar with the infant Prince James, on the night of the 13th. January 1567, and again on the 24th. of the same month, when on her way to visit her husband Darnley, then ill of the small-pox at Glasgow; with whom she returned to Falkirk on the 28th., and proceeded to Edinburgh on the following day. Soon after this Mary was a captive at Lochleven. After her escape from thence, Lord Livingstone was one of those who welcomed her on her arrival at Niddry Castle; and on the field of Langside, distinguished himself by his gallant conduct at the head of his vassals, composed of inhabitants of Falkirk. He rode with the Queen from that fatal field, and, along with her, was confined in different prisons by Elizabeth. At Bolton they were joined by Lady Livingstone, who, with her husband, were for several years the principal attendants, or rather companions, of the captive Queen. In 1573, they were both released from their sufferings by death, and their remains were conveyed to Falkirk for interment.
In the nonage of James VI., Scotland was for some time governed by the Earl of Morton a function which, from tile unpopularity of his measures, he was induced to resign. Having,

however, obtained possession of the King's person, and of the Castle of Stirling, his friends came to his assistance, and the Earl pitched his camp at Falkirk. Thither the army of his enemies soon resorted. When ready to engage, a truce was agreed to, followed by a treaty, which was published at the market crosses of Stirling and Falkirk on 14th. August 1578.
Falkirk is the only market-town in the parish, and is estimated as containing nearly 5000 inhabitants; but within the bounds of the Parliamentary Burgh, the population was ascertained in 1835 to be 7445.
The parish church is advantageously siituated for the inhabitants of the town, and none of the villages, with the exception of Bonnybridge and Grangemouth, (which last, has been erected into a parish Quoad Sacra) are more than 1½ mile distant. In some of the country parts of the parish, the population may be still 5 miles from the church. But for upwards of a century past, considerable parts of it have been annexed quoad sacra to the neighbouring parishes of Slamannan and Cumbernauld. Ancient documents show that, at one time, Denny, Slamannan, Muiravonside, and Polmont, formed parts of the then existing parsonage of Falkirk. Of the period when the three first of these parishes were disjoined, no record has been found; but Polmont was created a distinct parish in 1724.
The church of Falkirk was founded by Malcolm Canmore in A.D.1057. It was rebuilt in 1810. The ancient fabric consisted of four lofty arches, with extended aisles in the form of a cross, the centre forming the area or body of the church, and surmounted by a steeple. The present church contains sittings for 1500 hearers. It is a square building, with windows of a Gothic form, and a circular gallery. The internal arrangements are convenient. The old arches and steeple were allowed to remain, and the former area now serves as a porch for the present church. Statistical Account
There parish contains about 19823 Statute Acres; there are no detached portions of this parish nor are there any detached portions of any other parish situated within it. |

The following account of this Fort appears in Nimmo's History of Stirlingshire. Dated 1817.
"The first monuments, concerning the antiquity and original design of which we can attain to any degree of certainty, are the ruins of the proesidia, or forts, built, about eighty years after the birth of Jesus Christ, by Julius Agricola, who was the first that led a Roman army into these northern parts, Tacitus, in his life of that General, informs us, that, in his fourth campaign, he erected forts upon the narrow isthmus between the firths of Glota and Bodotria, that is, Clyde and Forth, with an intention to secure his conquests upon the south, and to confine the natives of the country as within another island. These forts appear to have been erected in the same tract where Lollius Urbicus afterwards raised the wall, which now goes by the name of Graham's Dyke. No vestiges of such works are to be seen in any other part of the isthmus; and, that those fabrics we are going to mention, were built in a more early period than the wall, is highly probable from the following circumstance: that the wall does not always run in a straight course, but often fetches a compass, and leaves more advantageous ground, with no other apparent view than that of coming up to some of them."
"The ruins of these proesidia are still, for the most part, visible alongst the track of the wall, and generally at the distance of two miles from each other. Little more, indeed, remains at present to distinguish the spots, where even the largest of them stood, than the vestiges of the outer ditches and ramparts, appearing amidst confused heaps

"of rubbish." ****
"Two of those stations are in the shire of Stirling; one of which is called Castlecary, the other Roughcastle.
Castlecary, which is the largest and most entire, is situated four miles westward from the town of Falkirk, and just upon the borders of Stirlingshire, where it joins to that of Dumbarton; it stands upon high ground, as those stations generally do, and commands an extensive prospect to the north and east; it comprehends several acres of ground, is of a square form, and surrounded with a wall of stone and mortar. The whole space within the walls has been occupied by buildings, the ruins of which, having raised the earth eight or ten feet above its natural surface, have given to the fort the resemblance of a hill-top, surrounded with a sunk fence; the rubbish above the stones have often been ploughed and yields tolerable crops except about the middle, where it is all overgrown with nut bushes and briars."
"In 1770, workmen were employed to search amongst the ruins for stones for the use of the great canal, which passes near it. Having removed the rubbish, they discovered sundry apartments built with stone and lime, and, in one of them, a number of stones standing erect, and about two feet in length, with plain marks of fire upon them. They appeared as having been designed to support some sort of vessel under which fire was put; but, whether the place had been once a Roman balneum, or what particular purpose it had served, we do not pretend to determine - The Editor supposes it to have been a bath - In the middle of the station, when the proetorium stood, large ruins were also discovered , but the men, not finding stones for their purpose, soon gave over digging."
"The outer wall of the fort hath been surrounded with a double ditch, or vallum, which is still filled with water upon the south side, where the entry hath been by a large causeway intersecting the ditch. Upon the west is a steep descent into a glen, through which a rivulet runs; and on the north, lies a low and barren muir, where is a free stone quarry, out of which the stones of the fort have been digged, as appears from their being of the same grain. In August 1771, as workmen were quarrying stones in that muir for the use of the canal, they came upon a large hollow in the rock, in which they found a considerable quantity of wheat, as also some iron wedges, and hammers, supposed to be Roman. Whether the wheat

"had been laid up there for the use of the Roman garrison, or had been hid, during some war in later times, cannot now be known. Much of the grain was tolerably firm, and the whole of it perfectly black; but, whether it had been parched, or had contracted that colour by being so long shut up from the air in a damp place, is also uncertain." *****
These proesidia must have been very little occupied by the Romans; for, after departure of Agricola, they abandoned all their conquests in Scotland, and seem, for some time, to have had very little footing in the island of Britain. It does not appear that there were any Roman forces in Scotland from that time except in the southern parts of it, in the reign of Adrian, until the arrival of Lollius Urbicus, in the reign of Antoninus, which was a period of fifty years. Agricola usually led his army into England for winter quarters; and we can hardly suppose that he left garrisons in his proesidia, during the two winters he continued in the island after their erection. Except in three or four of them, there is scarce, throughout the whole tract, any appearance of stone buildings, nor of any conveniencies for accomadating soldiers in winter, and some of them could not have been very commodious stations even in summer. We find no inscriptions upon any of them, except what belong to the reign of Antoninus; and, if they were planted with garrisons after the wall was built in his reign, it must have been only for a short time; for, soon after, the Romans again lost all this part of the island, till the time of Severus, who, after an unsuccessful expedition into Caledonia, found it necessary to relinquish the wall of Antoninus, and fix the boundary of the empire by a new wall in the north of England."
On the north of, and adjacent to, the Viaduct on the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway across the Red Burn, is a small wooded enclosure. This enclosure now contains all that is left to indicate the spot where this vast fort existed, it consists of a few inequalities in the general surface, of a very uninteresting appearance, the proprietor, the Earl of Zetland, enclosed these small remains as a memento of the past, and has forbidden his tenants molesting it. |

This road connected Carluke with the Wall of Antoninus Pius at Castlecary Fort; branching, at Carluke, from the main road which ran from the wall of Severus, near Carlisle, to the west end of the wall of Antoninus Pius, near Glasgow. With the exception of a small portion through a wood, on 29/11, its site cannot now be traced in this Parish, but had to be inserted on the plans from the natural appearances on the ground, guided by the plan of it in Roy's Antiquities - no person in the neighborhood being able to point it out. |

So called from being made during the reign of Emperior Antoninus Pius about the year 140. It is known also by the name of Graham's Dyke, the etymology of which is not correctly known, but is supposed to refer to one Grimus or Gryme who lived in the tenth century and who aspiring to royal honors raised a considerable army and marched against Malcolm the Second, but an amicable accommodation being come to in which it was agreed that the Wall should form the boundary between their respective territories, it ever after

-wards received that name. The work consists of an earthen wall and ditch or vallum, and was intended as a line of defence, and also to form the boundary of the empire in Britain. Its whole length is 36½ miles, and extends from Caerriden on the Frith of Forth to Dunglass on the River Clyde. There are few traces of it in the parish, as time and the enterprise of the husbandman, has done much to destroy all marks of it, still it can be traced out in some places especially in the policies of Callendar Park, and Bantaskine. * |

* "The first wall was raised by the emperor Hadrian along the line of the nearest chain of forts in the
year 120. The second was executed by Lollius Urbicus, in the reign of Antoninus , along the farthest chain
of forts, in the year 140. From Castle Cary the wall keeps on its usual course, along the slope of the commanding
ground, having the Bonny in front. Near a place called the Dyke something like a small tumulus exists in the ditch; and
farther on faint vestiges on the rampart may be perceived. Having passed through Sebeg Wood, it comes to the house
of that name, situated on the south brink of the ditch; and either here, or at Dick's-house, a little more to the eastward
(which is likewise called Mill-quarter), there hath been a station. From Castle Cary to Sebeg-house is 3300 yards.
The wall having passed Dick's-house, comes to the Chapel-hill, which is a small Castellum, situated on the north
side of the ditch, and surrounded with one of its own. Between this place, and the traces of an old watch tower, near
Elf-hill, according to tradition, Grime, with his Britons, broke through the wall; from which circumstance it might probably
have the name Grime's Dyke. Hence continuing eastward, and crossing Roundtree-burn we come to the station called
Rough castle, which is the last, that is the easternmost now existing on the wall, and distant from Sebeg-house 2860 yards
This station consists of two divisions, whereof the principal one seems to have been that towards the west, as it is surrounded
with triple envelope. The eastern part was probably an addition for lodging a greater body of troops, when, on some
particular emergency, the wall was repaired; and within it some foundations may be seen.
From Rough castle, eastward to Gilmor-seat, and some little way beyond it, is now the most entire part of the
whole wall. Beyond this, opposite to Tamfour-hill, the Roman way leading to Camelon, hath issued from the wall.
The author of the Britannia Romana places this ancient Roman city, on the tract of the wall itself, where there is not
a single vestige to be seen, whereas those of Camelon are very conspicuous three quarters of a mile in front it; which shews
that he could not have examined scrupulously every point himself, but had in some cases trusted to the slight and inaccurate
information of others. From the sortie of the Roman way, the wall continues its direction, and having crossed Tamfour-burn,
ascends the ridge whereon the house of Bantaskin is situated 3430 yards from Rough castle.
From Bantaskin, continuing along the ridge, the wall appears to have passed through the grounds now occupied by the * see page 59

The remains of this Castle is situated on the east bank of the Red Burn and near the western extremity of the parish, the date of its erection , or any other particular connected with it, is obscure, tradition ascribes it to the Romans, it is impossible to say, what has been the original form and dimensions of the building or what might have been the nature of the defensive works which surrounded it, of the former, nothing now remains but a tower which is entire, about 40 feet high, 25 feet square and turretted, this tower is kept in good repair, has received an addition, in the shape of a modern, slated roof and is inhabited by the proprietor's forrester. Of the Castle, no vestige is to be seen. The situation of this Castle has been very advantageous in point of defence, built on a prominent eminence, the western

The description of Antoninus' Wall called Graham's Dyke continued :-
* gardens on the south side of Falkirk. Beyond these its vestiges become again very distinct, in leading across the
plantations and avenue of Callendar-house: thence having passed a small brook, it hath proceeded by the village now
called New Merchieston, which appears to be the same place formerly named Langtown, where a fort existed on the wall in the
time of Timothy Pont. This probably stood near the east end of the village, and consequently at the distance of 4,400 yards
from Bantaskin, though no traces of it are now to be seen. Hence the wall no doubt led by the Mumrils' (into Polmont parish)
In the Brittania Romana is given a very full and accurate detail of all the inscriptions that had then been
discovered along the course of the wall; whence it appears that no more than three legions, the second,
surnamed Agusta, the sixth Victrix, and the twentieth, Valens Victrix, had any concern in the execution
of that public work."

Situated a little to the west of the present village of that name, was a Roman town and Seaport; and an anchor was dug up here in 1707.
Antiquarians are of opinion that the River Carron was at one time navigable farther up than the the site of Old Camelon, and the sea at one time came up near Falkirk & Covered that tract of Country now called the Carse. General Roy in reference to it in his Military Antiquities poses it to be the Roman town of Ad Vallum. |

A narrow ridge slightly elevated, and situated in the south east corner of Tentfield Plantation; the great Wall of Antoninus passes through. Nimmo is his history of Stirlingshire supposes it to have been an exploratory turret of the Romans, but there is nothing on the ground at present to support such a supposition. The ridge itself is evidently a natural feature, the ditch of the wall having been cut much deeper here than any other place, in consequence of of its having been conducted over the extreme summit of the ridge. |

A splendid water-way extending from Port Hopetoun at Edinburgh to Port Downie on the Forth and Clyde Canal; and by means of the latter navigation connecting Glasgow with Edinburgh, from which it is frequently termed the Edinburgh and Glasgow Canal. It passes westward thro' [through] part of the Counties of Edinburgh Linlithgow and Stirling. The parishes in the County of Edinburgh thro' [through] which the line is carried are St. Cuthberts, Colinton, Currie, Ratho and part of Kirkliston; in Linlithgowshire those of Uphall, part of Kirkliston, Dalmeny, Abercorn, Linlithgow, and in Stirlingshire those of Muiravonside, Polmont, and Falkirk For about 10 miles from Edinburgh the course of the line is westerly but then it makes a long sweep to the north, after which its direction again changes and it makes a varied, though in general a north-west course till its termination passing Falkirk on the south. (The foregoing is taken from Fullarton's Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland) |

In page 150 of Vol. [Volume] 4 of Miss Strickland's "Lives of the Queens of Scotland", she
relates the fugitive arrival of Queen Mary at Callander House on 1st
July 1565, after escaping the intended trap of the rebels who thought
to take her prisoner on her journey from Perth. She also states
(Vol [Volume] 5 P. [Page] 65) that Queen Mary often rested a night at Callander House
when journeying from Edinburgh to Stirling. Nimmo confirms the same,
in the Appendix to his History of Stirlingshire (P. [Page] 758), by stating that the
room is still shewn in which Queen Mary slept. |

River Carron (continued) |
|
|
[continued from page 153]
below the aforementioned Works the River again receives the water which was taken from it Larbert, from this point to Firth of Forth it is navigable. The navigable part of this River has undergone considerable changes during the past century, formerly it was very crooked, overflowed its banks, and left a large area of land almost worthless, it is now, comparatively straight, having strong embankments on either side, and the land which it formerly flooded is now the most valuable in the locality.
This River, during its course, forms portions of the boundaries of the parishes of, Fintry, Campsie, Kilsyth, St. Ninians, Dunipace, Denny, Larbert Falkirk & Bothkennar.
It is sometimes called the Carron Water |
