Nimmo's History of Stirlingshire |
|
The parish of Dunipace is in the Presbytery of Stirling, Synod of Perth and Stirling This parish was originally a chapel of the parish of Egglis, now St. Ninians, and was conveyed, along with the other chapels and oratories of that parish to the newly founded Abbey of Cambuskenneth, by Robert the Sixteenth Bishop of St. Andrews about the year 1130.
At the period of the Reformation, Dunipace and Larbert were erected into separate parishes. Dunipace was then more populous, and by far more wealthy than Larbert, so much so, that the latter parish could not maintain a Minister. A union, therefore, with Dunipace was desired, and accomplished under the authority of two Acts of the Scottish Parliament 1617 and 1624. From various documents, and from immemorial usage, it appears that the terms of union were, "That there should be one minister only for the two parishes; that each parish should retain and maintain its own Church and its own school; that each parish

should have its own Kirk Session and maintain its own poor separately; that the celebration of Divine Service, and the pastoral labours of the Minister should be equally divided between the parishes." It appears also, in consequence of the above terms of union, that Divine service was uniformly celebrated alternately in both churches. The sacrament of our Lord's Supper was also uniformly dispensed alternately, the Fast-day services preceding each sacrament being performed in the church of the other parish. This Union seems to have given satisfaction to all concerned until deviated from by the late Dr. [Doctor] Knox in 1794. But the impropriety of having either of these parishes without the regular dispensation of Divine Service, became so apparent to all concerned that, after some preliminary arrangements, an assistant to Mr. Bonar, the present Minister, at the joint expense of both parishes, was obtained, by which Divine Service was performed in both churches every Lord's Day. Mr. Bonar, however, continued to preach as above, till the opening of the new church of Dunipace. Since that time, Mr. Bonar has preached alternately in both churches, agreeably to the original terms of Union between these parishes.
The parishes of Dunipace and Larbert, being under the pastoral superintendence of one minister, his stipend is allocated from the teinds of both parishes. The stipend as fixed by the Court of Teinds in 1823, the period of the last Augmentation, 8½ Chalders of barley, and 8½ chalders of Oatmeal with 16£ 13s. 4d. for communion elements The manse was lately repaired at the mutual expense of both parishes. There is a Glebe in each parish.
There are two extensive and respectable printing establishments in this parish; three grain Mills, two flax mills, one mill for carding and spinning wool, and one for grinding charred wood for Carron Iron Works. There are three villages Herbertshire, Denovan, and Torwood.
Statistical Account
There are no detached portions of this parish, and there are no detached portions of any other parish situated within it. |

The ruins of this Castle are situated near the Southern extremity of, and in, Tor Wood. the walls of it are still complete, but the roof has fell in, an extensive courtyard would appear to have been attached, as a considerable portion of the west wall is still standing, the remainder being traceable, there are no existing remains, or even traces, of any artificial defensive works around it, neither does the founder appear to have taken advantage of the very formidable defence which the top of the glen would have afforded him, had he erected the building 200 yards further north. tradition is altogether silent with regard to this Castle, the probable date of its erection, or by whom or why built is unknown. It is the property of Col [Colonel] Dundas, Carron Hall, Larbert |

[September] 1680, in the presence of a numerous assembly, pronounced sentence of excommunication against some of the most violent persecutors of that day, among whom were Charles II, his brother James, Duke of York, Duke of Monmouth, and several other persons of note." An extensive River which rises near the roadside and about midway, between the villages of Campsie and Fintry. This river in the early part of its course passes through the Carron Bog, an extensive tract of Meadow land which is flooded by it during heavy rains. After emerging from Carron Bog, it rushes over Auchenlily-linn-spout, and coursing eastward gives motion to a number of Mills, Print Works &c until arriving at Larbert, where a large dam is constructed across it and the principal portion of its water conducted by a Canal to the Carron Iron Works, giving motion to all the machinery connected with the different departments of it. A little below these Works the water again joins the river, and from this point in its confluence with Firth of Forth at Grangemouth, it is navigable to vessels of small burden. |

This Roman Road, which is of considerable extent, leaves the Wall of Antoninus at Thomfuirhill, in the parish of Falkirk, and taking a northerly direction through the Co. [County] of Stirling, stretches far into Perthshire. No information in connection with it can be obtained in this locality, as there is not a vestige of the portion passing through the parish of Dunipace to be traced. It is generally supposed that it was along this road the English troops were marched to encounter the Scotch at the famous battle of Bannockburn in 1314, no other road existing in the locality at the time. |

"The whole structure of these mounts is of earth but they are not both of the same form and dimensions. The most easterly one is perfectly round, resembling an oven, and about 50 feet in height. That it is an artificial work, does not admit of the least doubt; but the same thing cannot be affirmed with equal certainty of the other, though it has generally been supposed to be so to. It bears no resemblance to the eastern one either in shape or size, At the foundation it is nearly of a triangular form, but the superstructure is quite irregular, nor does the height of it bear any proportion to its base. The mounts are now planted with fir? - ash and beech. *** The common account given of these mounts is, that they were erected as monuments of peace, concluded in that place betwixt the Romans and Caledonians, and that their name partakes of the language of both people; Dun, signifying 'hill', in the ancient language of the country, and Pax 'peace', in the language of Rome; the compound word Duni-pace, according to this etymology, signifies 'hills of peace'. If the concurring testimony of historians and antiquaries did not unite in giving this

Originally this was a Roman Catholic Chapel, but after the Reformation it was used as the parish Church. Neither the date of erection, nor Dedicatory name can be obtained In Nimmo's History of Stirlingshire it is thus mentioned "At the Chapel of this place (Dunipace) Robert Bruce and William Wallace are said to have had a second conference after the battle of Falkirk, which effectively opened the eyes of the former to a just view of his own true interest and that of the country." It was demolished in 1835 and not a vestige of it can now be seen. |
