"The name Drumen or as it is more commonly written, Drymen, is obviously derived from the Celtic word Druim, corresponding to the Latin Dorsum, a ridge or eminence. It is peculiarly descriptive of the appearance of a considerable part of the parish, which is frequently intesected by deep ravines, or water courses, with rising grounds between them. The same word is also to be met with as a component part in the names of many places, as Drumquhassle, Drumdash, Drumliagart &c The etymology of these and almost all the other names in the parish is purely Celtic." Old St: Acct. [Statistical Account]. The parish of Drymen is in the western district of Stirlingshire, its form being nearly triangular. It is bounded on the north by the parish of Aberfoil & Pert in Perthshire, from which it is separated at various points by the waters of Duchray, Kelty & Forth, on the south by the parish of Killearn, and the Shire of Dunbarton, on the west by the parish of Buchanan. The greater portion of this parish is composed of mountain and moor & in no part is it distinguished for fertility. "Its extreme length is about 15 Miles and and its breadth 10" New Stat: Acct: [Statistical Account] & Full. A considerable river having its source from "Ben Lomond" and running in an easterly direction to where it receives a river which issues from "Loch Ard" in Aberfoyle.
"The Forth," says Dr. [Doctor] Graham, speaking from personal exploration, "has its source from a spring in the northern side of Ben Lomond near the summit. It traverses Stirlingshire for 10 miles from its source under the appellation of the Water of Duchray, augmented, as it proceeds, by numberless mountain streams. It then enters Perthshire, where it receives an accession equal to the volume of its own Waters, in the river which issues from Lochard in Aberfoyle. It then assumes the name of Avondow or "Black River". After a course of about 5 miles, it again joins Stirlingshire below Gartmore house. where it obtains the name of Forth, which it retains." Report of Stirlingshire. p. [page] 60. The late Rev. [Reverend] David MacGibbon Minister of the parish in which Benlomond is situated, says that the stream which begins the Forth is called Glenguoi"

According to the authorities quoted this is the site of an ancient Stronghold, or Peel, Andrew McFarlane an old man who is tenant of the ground, says that he took up part of the foundation, of what appeared to have been a strong building, some years ago, and that the stones were roughly hewn and squared. Several of these stones are now to be seen on the side of the Claggans Burn, where they have been cast to be out of the way, they are the same as those used in building strongholds of the middle ages. There is no appearance of a building now to be seen, the ground being under cultivation, the sight marked is on a knoll which appears to be natural, there is also a hollow on the west side which has the appearance of having been cut, and which terminates in a hollow which McFarlane states, was at one time a marsh or bog. There is no mention made of this in the published [continued on page 30] |

A Considerabl river having its source from Ben Lomond and running in an Easterly direction as far as "Alloa" where it forms itself into an Estuary and is called the "Firth of Forth"
"The Forth" says D[octo]r Graham, speaking from per[sonal] exploration, "has its source from from a Spring the northern side of Ben Lomond, near the sum[mit]. It traverses Stirlingshire for 10 miles from its source under the appellation of the "Water of Duchray", augmented, as it proceeds, by numberless mountain streams. It then enters Perthshire where it receives an accession equal to the volume of its own Waters, in the river which issues from Lochard in Aberfoyle. It then assumes the name of Avendow or "Black River", after a course of about 5 miles, it again joins Stirlingshire below Gartmore house, where it obtains the name Forth, which it retains."

An ancient Square Enclosure at the western extremity of Flanders Moss on the Ward Burn, on the north side the outer and inner ramparts are quite discernable, on the east the inner only, on the west the inner and a small part of the outer at the north west corner - on the south the inner rampart is quite visible although it is now nearly levelled or removed, the part remaining having the appearance of an old stone wall - on the north it is covered with brushwood, also partly on the other three sides. The Fosse round the whole is quite visible, although very faint on the east, south, & part of the west side, the bottom of the Fosse or ditch is only about 12 or 18 inches lower than the surface of the surrounding ground & sloped very gently inward from the track of the outer rampart, on the north side the Fosse is more distinct, there are two openings on the west side and one on the east side, being made by the occupier of the ground for carts to pass through.
On the farm of Garfarran and within the Barony of Drummond are the remains of a Roman Fort - called the Peel of Garfarran (Castle of Vexation)

resident on the spot, pointed out to
me the position of foundation walls
within the square, and portions of the
ditch have been found by removing
the rock which underlies the surface
only a few feet - he also drew
attention to similar objects now
nearly obliterated on either side
"Peel of Claggans" and "Peel of Garchell"

Similar objects were met with in
Crawford Parish, Lanarkshire, all
found in sequestered spots - They are evidently not Roman Camps

it is at the western extremity of Flanders Moss - the outer and inner ramparts are still quite discernable, as also the Fosse surrounding it, with the opening through which it might be filled from the rivulet which runs near. New Stat. [Statistical] Account.
Another ancient stronghold, called the Peel of Carfarran "Castle of Vexation", and evidently a Roman Castellum, presents itself, in the utmost possible state of preservation, on the north bank of a small rivulet on the north east side of the Parish of Drymen, called the Burn of the Ward. This military work is nearly square, and measures, within the trenches, towards 50 paces either way. It has two ramparts and one ditch, which, with the ramparts, measures 20 paces across. The circumference of the work is 320 paces. It is about a mile from the hill of Gartmore, which is conceived to be a corruption of the Celtic Caer-Mor, or Great Fort.
From the great line of Roman Road which passes through Stirlingshire from south to north, a branch it would seem, struck off near Stirling, and, crossing the Forth stretched to Flanders hill in Perthshire. Recrossing the Forth, it probably penetrated to Carfarran in Stirlingshire. Some vestiges of it are noticed by the Statists of the parishes through which it seems to have run. In the Moss of Kincardin a Roman way was discovered 12 feet broad, & formed by trees laid across each other, & in Moss Flanders, another running from southeast to northwest.

An occupied cottage, the property of the Duke of Montrose. "There is a tradition that the great Napier of Merchieston removed the Church of Drymen to its present site. The former is not known, but was perhaps at Drumakill."
Nimmo's History of Stirling
"Drumakill, beside Spittal, is by some supposed to have been the site of the Church, which however would seem to have been situated at Knocknaheglaish, on the lands of Finnick Drummond."

All that remains to be seen at this place is an elevation about 4 feet in height and 85 feet square it stands in a level field and appears to have been formed by earth cast from a ditch which can be traced on the North, South, and West sides.
James Ramsay states that he assisted to remove some foundation stones and part of a staircase from the elevation, also to cast earth from it into the ditch. There is no mention made of this in the published records of the parish, but it is well known by the old people in the neighbourhood as the "Peel of Garchell." |

There is a large earthen mound north of Cashlie Mill said to have been a Roman Camp by Mr McFarlane the Proprietor, but it has more of the appearance of having been a British Fort than a Roman Camp, nothing is known of it in the locality whatever.
It is flat on the top and slopes down regularly on the north and east side, on the south and west side the slope is not so regular, at the bottom of the first or highest slope there is a piece of flat or table land and then another irregular slope, which seems to have been artificial on the north side, on the west and south, it appears to have been partly artificial and partly natural, it is all covered with a fine sward of sweet grass. |

of water. It is well known in the
locality by the name given.

"The only mark of antiquity, now to be discerned, is a large earthen mound,
at a place called Cashlie, near which, it is said, the vestiges of a
Roman Camp were formerly to be seen, though now no traces of it are
to be found." (Old Stat. Act. [Old Statistical Account]) |

I fear that the word
Cairn has been received under
a mistake for Keir, and
if so I would like to get
it corrected before the Parish
is published.

An eminence on the farm of Finnich Drummond, which. the Authorities here quoted, believe it to be the site of a Church, from the fact, that a number of years ago when it as trenched and planted, there were raised several human bones and the foundation of an old building. The ground within the track of the old Fence would indicate that it has been artificially wrought as it seems much richer than that surrounding it.
"Drumakill, beside Spittal, is by some supposed to have been the site of the old Church. which however would seem to have been situated at Knockinhaglish, on the lands of Finnich Drummond, in the neighbourhood there is a remarkable well called St. Vildrin's Well, perhaps a corruption of St Vininus to whom Kilwinning was dedicated"

A large Cairn of stones on the west side of Stockie Muir. Mr. Buchanan is of the opinion that it is one of the same as that one he removed about 30 years ago containing the Stone Coffins. see trace 5 of 20-14. "About ½ mile northwest of a very fantastical basaltic rock called Wanzie in the parish of Killearn, there is, on the farm of Finnich-Tenant in the parish of Drymen, a sepulchral cairn, about 20 paces long and 10 broad. A row of Kist-vaens, or Stone Coffins, seems to form the body of the tumulus, and is covered with a very large heap of great stones, obviously rounded by attrition, and, therefore brought from some river, the nearest is the Burn of Carnock."
