020.07 | The site of a Castle or mansion which had been long the residence of Napier, the inventor of the logarithms. The stones of this building appear to have been used in the building of the Mill and offices, as there are some with very ancient carvings. and one bearing date 1574 which is placed in the gable of the byre. "Gartness on a rocky bank of the Enrick, in the parish of Drymen, close to a romantic cascade, was a favourite residence of Napier, and the scene of his profound investigations." Nimmo's History of Stirlingshire 2 Vol. [Volume] page 414 Miss Govan has preserved some of the carved stones belonging to this castle which she got removed some years ago to her own house at the Park of Drumquhassle |
