The parish of Alva is in the Presbytery of Stirling, Synod of Perth and Stirling. The name of this parish in Ancient Records is written Alueth, Alvath, or Alveth: this last mode of spelling is to be seen upon a tombstone in the Church Yard, dated A.D.1632. The present spelling, Alva, has been in use since the beginning of the last century. The parish of Alva forms a detached part of the County of Stirling for judicial purposes: but since the passing of the Reform Bill it has been annexed to the County of Clackmannan for returning a Knight of the Shire to Serve in Parliament. The Parish of Alva is surrounnded, on all sides, by the County of Clackmannan, except on the north, where it is bounded by the Parishes of Blackford and Dunblane in the County of Perth; on the West by the parish of Logie; on the south by the Parish of Alloa and a detached part of the parish of Clackmannan; and on the east by the parish of Tillicoultry. The minister's stipend consists of £34 1s 9d including the allowance for Communion elements [Continued on Page 2] |

[Below entry for Silver Glen]
Note. This glen obtains its name from the fact of extensive mines of silver having been worked
in it upwards of a century ago. Five mines can still be easily seen, three on the west
of the Silver Burn and two on the east. Of those on the west side of stream, the northmost one.
near a footbridge (at whose entrance there are considerable excavations) is believed to have been the chief
and most valuable mine. South of that, about 4 chains, is another mine, branching westwards and which was probably
only a trial bore. About 50 links to the right of this is the western entrance of a gallery about a chain long, having its eastern mouth
close to the stream. It cannot be entered now, but a person who has often passed through it when young, informed me
that a gallery branches northwards from it, which they were cautioned to avoid, as it led into the large silver mine
in which was a deep shaft. This gallery would therefore seem to be the levels, alluded to in the Statistical Account.

[Note relating to Silver Glen: continued from page 12]
as having been cut to drain the water from the chief silver mine, and in which large quantities
of cobalt ore were found. Of the two mines on the east side of the burn, the westmost
one (about a chain above the footbridge before mentioned) can be easily entered for about 20 yards, where it
suddenly ceases, or that it must have been abandoned, or a shaft may have been sunk which may have
been filled up since artificially, which however is not likely to be the case. The one lower down the
hill on this side of the stream is believed to have been a mine from which silver was procured.
It can be easily entered, but is dangerous, is about 20 yards up there is a deep shaft, which owing
to deficient light cannot be seen but may be felt.
The general belief is that silver was only procured from two of the mines (one on each side
of the stream) and the fact of cobalt having been obtained seems to have been lost sight
of in the greater value of the silver.

church stands a little to the east of the village, upon an eminence,

1815, at the expense of James Raymond Johnstone Esqr, it was wholly
Rebuilt and fitted up properly within so as to accommodate
586 sitters, and at present it is a comfortable and elegant place
of worship." Statistical Account.
Note.
The grave yard surrounding the church
occupies about an acre, and it is presumed that
this is the acre of land granted in 1276 (see extract below)
to the church. The present is the ancient graveyard,
in which it is reasonable to suppose the old church
would have been erected; and it is likely that, in building the
new church, the old site would, as nearly as possible, be retained
in such a small enclosure, so as not to disturb the graves.
[St. Servanus Well]
"By another extract from the Chartulary of Cambus Kenneth,
it appears that Alexander, styled Dominus de Striveling
Miles, made a grant of one acre of land to God, the Virgin Mary, to St Servanus,
and to the church of St Servanus de Alveth, describing it particulary as lying near the well
of St. Servanus "et inter ipsom protem (St Serf's Well) et ecclesiam". This charter bears date
1276. The well is still within the limits of the Minister's glebe, and continues to send forth a stream
of excellent water." Statistical Account |

A large village situated at the south base of the Ochil Hills. The greater part of it is comparatively new, having been built within the last twenty years. The principal street is that part of the turnpike road from Stirling to Kinross intersecting it from west to east. The houses on each side of this street are chiefly two storeys; in the rest of the village the houses are mostly but one storey. Woollen manufacture is carried on here to a considerable extent, and gives employment to most of the inhabitants. It has three churches, four schools, a branch of the Union Bank of Scotland, one hotel, a town hall, several very good shops, and two small publichouses. Besides the mills worked by steam power, there are a number of buildings in which handloom weaving is carried on. |
