[Below entry for Silver Glen]
Note. This glen obtains its name from the fact of extensive mines of silver having been worked
in it upwards of a century ago. Five mines can still be easily seen, three on the west
of the Silver Burn and two on the east. Of those on the west side of stream, the northmost one.
near a footbridge (at whose entrance there are considerable excavations) is believed to have been the chief
and most valuable mine. South of that, about 4 chains, is another mine, branching westwards and which was probably
only a trial bore. About 50 links to the right of this is the western entrance of a gallery about a chain long, having its eastern mouth
close to the stream. It cannot be entered now, but a person who has often passed through it when young, informed me
that a gallery branches northwards from it, which they were cautioned to avoid, as it led into the large silver mine
in which was a deep shaft. This gallery would therefore seem to be the levels, alluded to in the Statistical Account.
