The island derives it's name from Stour, a Norse word signifying great, and the Latin papa, a priest. It thus signifies the great island of the priests, in contradistinction to Papa Little, and the still smaller island of Papa, in the Bay of Scalloway. Papa Stour is upwards of two miles in length, and nearly the same breadt. The coast is much indented by Voes, which form very good harbours. This island is one of the most fertile in the Shetland group. Its inhabitants (amounting in 1871 to 351), are almost entirely confined to the rich belt of cultivated land, which runs along the east side. Papa forms an excellent fishing station. In addition to its own natives, several boat crews resort thither in summer, to prosecute this important industry. The precipitous west coast of Papa affords highly intersting rock scenery. OS1/31/20/2A Papa Stour Continued 034 ; 035 ; 040 ; 041 [continued from page 2] Papa Stour is divided between two proprieters - Lady Nicolson, and the Trustees of the late Arthur Gifford of Busta. A nice little parish Church, stands near the chief centre of population on the east side of the island. Abridged from "Shetland; Descriptive and Historical" by Robert Cowie M.A. M.D. [Master of Arts Master of Divinity] 1874. Prior to the amalgamation of Walls, Sandness and Papa Stour into one ministry the latter, like each of the two former, was an independent parish, but is now legally [i.e. Ecclesiastically] recognised only as forming a portion of the united parish of Walls and Sandness, similar to Foula, which is also said to have formerly been a parish. Locally, however, Foula is consigned to Walls, and Papa Stour to Sandness.

The ruins are nearly covered with rubbish but the walls appears to be about 6 feet in height and about 20 feet thick at the base. There are the remains of eleven small chambers, in the wall, which have evidently been connected by a passage, with one another and with the interior of the building. The door faces to the northwest. This island is connected with another island of smaller size which is situate and on which there is said to have been another Pictish building between high and low water mark, by a stone causeway erected over a series of conduits.

"It is constructed of vast pieces of a very hard kind of white and red granite, the pro-duce of the rock on which it stands; the stones altogethr rude, but strongly and closely built; the wall double, with a sort of spiral passage, which one can creep through where it is not choked up with ruins, No sort of cement has been used in building, and, notwithstanding, the walls are firm and entire, except where they have been pulled down by men. The gallery is covered with long lintel stones, which rest on both walls; and the floor of the one is the covering of the other. Round the whole building, which is circular, is a ditch and rampart. Its dimensions follow, together with a plan, elevation, and section:- The diameter withing the inner walls, 26 ft [feet] 6 in [inches]; whole diameter at the foundation, 44 ft [feet]; thickness of the inner wall, 3 ft [feet] 6 in [inches]; breadth of the gallery [continued] Over.
