Papa Stour | Continued | 034 ; 035 ; 040 ; 041 | [continued from page 2] Papa Stour is divided between two proprieters - Lady Nicolson, and the Trustees of the late Arthur Gifford of Busta. A nice little parish Church, stands near the chief centre of population on the east side of the island. Abridged from "Shetland; Descriptive and Historical" by Robert Cowie M.A. M.D. [Master of Arts Master of Divinity] 1874. Prior to the amalgamation of Walls, Sandness and Papa Stour into one ministry the latter, like each of the two former, was an independent parish, but is now legally [i.e. Ecclesiastically] recognised only as forming a portion of the united parish of Walls and Sandness, similar to Foula, which is also said to have formerly been a parish. Locally, however, Foula is consigned to Walls, and Papa Stour to Sandness. |
