These Consist of large piles of stones of various sizes & weight, thrown loosely together without regard to structure or formation and are Called by the inhabitants of the surrounding district "Awmoses" or "Alms Cairns". It is very difficult to get any reliable information regarding their meaning or origin. The inhabitants say it was they school children who erected them day by day as the happenned to escape a flogging at School. This statement is at least doubtful, as some of the stones in these Cairns are of such dimensions that even the united efforts of a number of school children would be unable to remove them. The true origin of them appears to be (although the peopl are disinclined to say so) that Fishermen when going to Sea were or are in the habit of making a vow or promise

to contribute, or give an "Awmos" to either of the Cairns if successful in that days fishing.
There is said to be a large stone under one of these Cairns (the most westerly) with a round hole in it, out of which the old men used to drink whisky at particular seasons of the year.
These Cairns are greatly diminished in size since a portion of road was made part where they stood the stones having been taken away to repair road with.
The superstitions alluded to in the foregoing are fast dying out. None but the very oldest of the inhabitants have much faith in them at the present day |

Nothing but the Site on which these Objects Stood can now be pointed out, and even part of the Site has been washed away by the Sea. There is a tradition in the neighbourhood that this place was once the Seat of a bishop, and that the place of worship was large, & had a very high Spire. The late Mr. Irvine, Midbreck, was Said to possess Some written documents relating to these Antiquities. They are situated close to H.W.M. [High Water Mark] on the NW. [North West] side of Papil Bay, on the property of Major Cameron of Garth &c. Both the Chapel & Burial Ground are considered to belong to a very remote period, but so little is known about them that no particular period is assigned. [Initialled] J.Y. |
