"Kirk Island (now called West Burra) has a church within a mile of the South end near the Sound-side of Burray Isle, called St. Laurence Church, built by the midmost of the 3 Norwegian sisters (of whom the eldest built Tingwall & the youngest Ireland churches) whose steeple is 5 or 6 stories high altho' [although] a little church: its quire yet remains" - Sir R Sibbald 1711 old people still remember the old church: the present one is built on its site.
