051 | James Hunt Esq. PhD. F.S.A. [Doctor of Philosophy Fellow of Society of Anthropologists] &c. &c President of the Anthropological Society of London, refers to this object, in his report on the explorations of the islands of Shetland, page 310, as follows:- "In company with Mr. Umfray, of Reawick, and Mr. Johnston, of Hestinsetter, I examined what is known as the "Giants Grave". It is situated on the latter gentleman's property on the top of Hestinsetter Hill. With very great difficulty we removed a large cap stone, which had defied the efforts of all who had before attempted it. The top stone measured five feet 10 inches by four feet ten inches; the entrance, one foot seven inches; the interior averaged about five feet ten inches wide, and about the same distance long, It was of a semioctagonal irregular shape, composed of six stones, It was here I found the large rough stone, and the fragments of pottery and calcined bones, which I now produce, This structure had many of the characters of a cromlech; and it is worthy of note that the pottery here found essentially differs from any found elsewhere; the only bit preserved had the string pattern on it." |
