053.13 | This name applies to large sheet of fresh water situated about one half mile to the west of "Lerwick." it is about one half mile in length. lying north and south. it breadth is nearly one quarter of a mile accross its widest part; in the southeast it is separated from the sea by a narrow beach, called the "Ayre of Clickhimin". Through this Ayre the public Road to the southern districts of "Shetland" passes. Passing along the Road here, the traveler's attention is drawn to a small island, on which there is to be observed the remains of an ancient "Pictish Fort" or "Castle". The island is situated at Snh [Southern] end of the loch, and communicating with the shore by means of a causeway of large stones. |
