It rises among the Moorfoot hills in Mid-Lothian between "Ruther Law" and "Hunt Law" on the N [North] of the parish of Heriot; and after flowing 2 Miles due East receives from the North a tributary equal in importance to itself. it then flows in a general S. [South] Easterly direction. enters Stow parish and traverses its whole length for a distance of 11 Miles - It flows through hills of considerable height occasionally bold & precipitous, but generally sloping and of Soft outline, close in its Vale on both sides, seldome allowing Haughs boader [broader] than 1/4 of a Mile for the deposit of alluvial soil. It falls into the Tweed a few hundred yards below Abbotsford - It traverses altogether a distance of 21 Miles - |
