004.13 | The ruins of the old mansion house of Torwoodlee; Situated on the top of a Steep Slope about ΒΌ mile west of the present "mansion" there is a good portion of the outer walls Still Standing, they are massive, and the windows were only narrow apertures, booth they, and the doors are faced with Red Sandstone, the lower Storey was divided into Small apartments, and strongly Arched. There is a Small tower on the east Side thro' [through] which was the main entrance. It is supposed to have been built about the latter end, of the 9th or beginning of the 10th Century, and was inhabited until about 60 years ago - the present Admiral Pringle being born in it. |
