[North West] from the town of Selkirk is one of the loftiest elevation in the parish. It rises gradually at the Long Philip Burn to the height of 1964 feet above the level of the sea or 1604 feet above the level of the river Ettrick at Selkirk, and extends from th [there] for a considerable distance towards the N [North] Where the hill is not covered with heath it exposes a dark soil of the nature of pe [peat] from which it has received its name.
