[Situation] At the South side of Selkirkshire. The Parish of Roberton in SelKirKshire is bounded on the North by those of Ettrick, Kirkhope, Selkirk (detached) and Ashkirk in Selkirkshire, - on the East by Roberton in Roxburghshire, - on the South by Teviothead and Roberton in Roxburghshire and on the West by Ettrick; and it contains an area of 11,628 Acres. The Parish of Roberton - partly in Selkirkshire and partly in Roxburghshire - is bounded on the North by Ettrick, Kirkhope, Selkirk (detached) and Ashkirk in Selkirkshire and in Roxburghshire, on the East by Wilton, Hawick and Teviothead, on the South by Teviothead and Eskdalemuir in Dumfriesshire and on the West by Eskdalemuir Dumfriesshire and Ettrick. The parts in Roxburgh and Selkirk embrace the entire Ph [Parish] of Roberton, - so named - no detached part of it being situate within the boundaries of another Parish nor a detached portion of other lying within the limits above assigned to it. Its shape is an oblong resting on those Parishes which bound it on the East - and stretching from North-east to South-west - it measures 13 miles in length and from 4 to 5 in breadth and contains an area of 19,666 acres of which there may be about 2,000 arable 600 wood and 17,666 pasture &c &c - This Parish as compared with those mountainous districts which enclose it on the North, West and South may be considered hilly - the ranges for the most part possessing both lowness of surface and softness of feature, - the acclivities in a few instances at the S. W. [South West] being moderately precipitous, where Craik Moor and Crib Law attain an altitude of 1300 feet a.s.l. [above sea level]. There are several sheets of water in the North-Wn [North-Western] district of which Heellmuir and Alemuir Lochs are the largest. Borthwick Water from the South-Wm [South-Western] extremity nearly bisects the Parish [continued on page 2] |
