The name Galashiels means simply "the Shepherds' Huts on the Gala" the word Gala or Gwala itself meaning "a full stream" - The terms "shiels" and shielings were very commonly used by the Northumbrian Saxons to denote the temporary shelters of Shepherds and are still currently employed by the Peasantry in pastoral districts, besides forming part of the compound names of many localities -
The parish consists of the ancient and suppressed parishes of Baulside and Lindean, the former in Selkirkshire, and the latter in Roxburghshire, but the Selkirk portion may be considered as the Parish proper -
It is bounded on the NE [North East] by Melrose, on the S. [South] East by |

Melrose and that portion of Galashiels which is situated in Roxburghshire on the S. [South] by Selkirk and Stow and on the N.W. North West] by Stow-
The general aspect is hilly with winding vales - the greatest height, that of Meigle, a hill overlooking the town, is of 1400 feet, and the lowest plain, situated at the junction of the Tweed and Gala is 200 feet above the level of the sea -
The church was built in 1813, in the semigothic style, terminated with a square tower, is in the best state of repair. It was built to hold between 800 and 900, but by the help of benches along the areas it accommodates about 1000 hearers -
The manse, built about 48 years ago, is an excellent house |

All the county watered by the "Ettrick" the "Yarrow" and their tributaries was anciently a Forest, the remains of the ancient Caledonian Forest
Excepting a few straggling thorns and some solitary birches, no trees now remain, although, wherever protected from the sheep, copses soon arise without any planting |

The site of an old Tower or "Border Peel" situated a short distance South of "Torwoodlee", This Tower is mentioned by Chambers in his "Picture of Scotland" but gives no particulars concerning it further than, that its Laird and the Laird of "Buckholm Tower" were great enemies of the Laird of "Torwoodlee", and they were also great persecutors of the Covenanters and to facilitate their schemes they had a subterranean passage leading between Blindlee and Buckholm Towers", (but this is scarcely probable as the Vale of the Gala intervenes which is a considerable depth below each Tower) it has been quite levelled to the ground |

008.06 |
The Armorial bearings of Galashiels are a Fox and plum tree. Their derivation is thus accounted for, During an invasion of Edward III., a party of English, who had been Repulsed in an attempt to raise the Siege of Edinburgh Castle, Came and took up Quarters in Galashiels. it was in Autumn, and the Soldiers soon began to Straggle about in Search of plums Which then grew wild in the Neighbourhood. Meanwhile a party of Scots having come up and learned What their enemies were about, Resolved to attack them, saying that they would prove sourer plums to the English than any they had Yet gathered, drive them headlong to a Spot on the Tweed, still called "Englishmen's Sike". Nearly opposite Abbotsford, And there hewed them down With the Sword almost to a Man.
The Sike Referred to has long since been Covered up, except a Small portion East of the Naphtha Works - which appears to have been a deep Glen, or ditch. |

A Remarkable trenched fortification which may be traced (in parts) from near the junction of the Gala and Tweed, to the Mountains in Cumberland its general breadth is from 17 to 24 feet and is Supported by hill-forts scattered in the line of its Course. "It is known in the Country says Chalmers, by the several names of the Catrail, and of the Pictsworkditch." The Catrail is the British name of ancient times; and signifies, in the British language - what distinctly intimates the purposes for which it was made - 'the dividing fence', or the partition of defence. The name of the Pictsworkditch was applied to this remarkable fence, in more modern times, by the same people who called Severus's Wall the Picts-Wall and other objects by the same well Known name. "The Catrail consisting of a fosse, and a double rampart, runs through the Shires of Selkirk, and Roxburgh, from Galashiels on the North, to the Peel-fell, at the eastern extremity of Lidsdale, on the South. The Catrail first appears on the North of a farm called Mosalee |

A Mile Westward from Galashiel, near the obvious remain of a British form. From Mosalee, it turns, Southward by the West Side of (Boghall; long since destroyed) And at the end of two miles, arrives at the Rink Hill, on the Summet of which there are remains - as the name implies - of a British hill-fort, that is of An eliptical form, and defended by two ditches, and two ramparts of earth And stone. From the Rink Hill the Pictsworkditch proceeds in South West direction, across the Tweed, near the influx of the Houdenpot Burn at which place it enters the Parish of Selkirk.
The remains of several Branch fortified ditches and Small out posts appear in the Neighbourhood of Rink Hill. |

003 ; 004 ; 007 ; 008 |
A popular, poetic & historical name for the whole, or chief part of Selkirkshire - All the Country watered by the Ettrick, the Yarrow, and their tributaries, and the Kindred districts watered by the Districts North of the Tweed, besides upperward of Clydesdale, were anciently a literal Forest, the remains of the ancient Caledonian Forest -
The most numerous Woods were Oaks, mingled with Birch & Hazel -
Excepting a few struggling Thorns, & some solitary Birches, no traces have remained, altho, [although] whenever protected from the Sheep, Copses, soon arise without planting - |
