YETHOLM | Yetholm | Continued | [Continued from page 3] with water, but at one probably an Island of Yetholm Loch, there formerly stood one of those old Towered or Castle so frequent in the South of Scotland - It was the Baronial residence of the Kers of Lochtower, a branch probably, of the Kers of Cessford, or the Roxburgh family - This ancient tower and the surrounding scenery suggested to the author of Waverley, the picture he draws of "Avenel Castle" in the Monastery - see note at the end of the 7th Vhapter, Vol [Volume] II - "Kirk Yetholm" has long been known & somewhat celebrated as the residence of the largest Colony of Gipsies in Scotland - The only Villages in this parish are Town Yetholm" & "Kirk Yetholm," in both of which there has usually a Baran Bailie; one appointed by the Marquis of Tweedale, the other by Mr Wauchop of Niddrie.
