016.04 | A well built village of considerable size, situated in a pleasant valley at the north base of the Cheviot Hills and 7 1/2 miles distant from Kelso here there are three Inns (of which one is Temperance), Post Office, Public Library and a station for the Co [County] Police. The rest comprises tradesmen, Cottiers, and Feuars or small Farmers who have houses in very long leases and rent a portion of land from the ower [owner] of the soil. A large wool and Lamb fair is held here in the month of July annually. The entire Village is the property of Andrew Wauchope Esqr of Niddrie. |
