J Scott Chisholme Esqr. Striches
025.03 [Situation] Forming the En [Eastern] part of Stirches mansion.
The original part of Stirches Mansion House is of considerable antiquity. It consisted of a massive Square Tower Situated on a terraced platform - defended by a court yard wall inclosing domestic offices - The under Story as usual in Such buildings was a vaulted Chamber used in emergency as a Stable - from it access was had to the upper Stories by a narrow winding stair in the thickness of the wall called in those times a Turnpike which led into the Hall or Public room common to all the inmates. The Hall was upwards of thirty feet by eighteen with a large fire place at each end - This is now divided into two apartments - above were Sleeping rooms - The walls of this part of the building are six feet thick - Above the East entrance door the only access to the Tower is the following inscription - "Christus Rex sequm qui non dormital in aevium : prote gat hane. Aedem nec non Sine Crinimil plebeim" 1503. -
In 1686 Walter Chisholme demolished the upper stories of the Tower and built the present South front roofing in the whole in one line - Even at that period the windows from the marks in the stone facings appear to have been secured by strong iron gratings - His initials and those of his wife are carved with the date of the addition above one of the windows - thus - W.C : M.B: 1686. He also built the kitchen and brew-house &c attached to the Tower, since removed, but the mark of which is still visible on the East Gable. The other parts of the building are modern - The old Turnpike stair remains entact-
