OS1/29/40/1 TEVIOTHEAD Teviothead Oliver & Boyd's Edinburgh Almanac. Plan of proposed Parish (1849) 024; 025; 031; 032; 036; 037; 038 [situation] At the South West end of the County of Roxburgh. The name of this Parish originates with the River Teviot which - taking its rise at the Swn. [Southwestern] direction drains the entire central division of the Parish. The Parish of Teviothead is bounded on the North by those of Roberton and Hawick, on the East by Hawick, Kirkton and Cavers, on the South partly by Castleton and Dumfries-shire and on the West by Dumfries-shire and Roberton Parish. It was erected into a Parish from disjoined portions of Hawick and Cavers by Summons of disjunction and erection at the instance of the Duke of Buccleuch against the heritors of these Parishes dated 1849. It measures in length from N.E. [North East] to S.W. [South West] about 9½ miles and in breadth from West to East 7 miles and contains an area of about 31,560 Impl. [Imperial] Acres. The Southern division is nearly all in hill-pasture - the northern district exhibiting many striking varieties of hill and dale well sub-divided enclosures and excellent pasturage. The greatest elevations are PiKethaw Hill, Triep Hill and Tudhope Hill on the Southern boundary common to Dumfriesshire. The principal Stream River Teviot rising [continued on page 2]
OS1/29/40/1 [page] 1 Parish of Teviothead -- County of Roxburgh [note] No detached part of Teviothead is situate within another Ph. [Parish] and there are not within the boundaries of the same a detd. [detached] portion of any other ph. [parish].
OS1/29/40/2 TEVIOTHEAD [continued from page 1] rising near the southern point of Ph [Parish] runs in a N.Ern [North Eastern] direction through the entire length of the central division and in its course receives many tributory streams of which Linneycleuch, Fawhope and Hislop Burns are the longest Allan Water a considerable stream and also a tributory of the Teviot rises near the S.En [South Eastern] extremity and forms a portion of the En [Eastern] boundary. There are no minerals, nor manufactories carried on, the district may be considered as pastoral. The Turnpike Road between Langholm and Hawick from S.W. [South West] to N.E. [North East] nearly bisects the Parish. There is no town nor village the nearest market-town being Hawick. The principal and nearly sole proprietor is the Duke of Buccleuch. Population at the last census 550. The Catrail or Picts' Work Ditch an ancient line of defence between the Romanized Britains of the Cumbrian Kingdom and their Saxon invaders on the East, consisting of a fosse and double rampart may still be traced for a short distance at the N.En [North Eastern] district. Traces of this rampart may be distinctly seen on the ground, running in a S.En [South Eastern[ direction and is said to have extended from Galashiels on the North to Peel Fell on boundary between Roxburgh and Cumberland Shires on the South - or at least to have traced from these two points. Numerous earth works characterized by local authorities as ancient British Forts are scattered over the district. The Site of a Druidical Circle has been shewn, the only indication on ground of the existence of which is the disturbed appearance of the spot. Various Towers and other structures have been shewn, neither historical nor other remarkable events being connected therewith, it can only be observed that their construction belong to the middle and feudal eras. OS1/29/40/11 CATRAIL or PICTS' WORK DITCH Catrail Catrail or Picts' Work Ditch Mr. W.N. Kennedy (Hawick) Mr. R. Michie (Hawick) W. Scott Esqr. Commonside J. Grieve Esqr. Skelfhill Mr Scott Esqr. Priesthaugh G. Oliver esqr. Hawick New Statl [Statistical] Acct [Account] of Roxbh. [Roxburgh] Fullarton's Impl [Imperial] Gazetteer Chalmers' Caledonia. 031.03 The Catrail (as it exists at present) is not more than 4 or 5 feet wide, and the ramparts about 4 or 5 feet high, and in ascending Whitehillbrae, it is only a few inches deep from the proximity of the rock to the surface." I have traced its course from Hoscoat-shiel to Hoscoat Plantation, (in Co. [County] Selkirk) where for about one mile it is very distinct, and again along the farm of Woodburn to slatehill Moss for upwards of a mile, where it is almost in a perfect state, also, from Northhouse to Mosscleuch with the following result:- For a considerable part of the way from Hoscoat-shiel to Hoscoat Plantation, it lies alongside a Drove Road and has evidently been tampered with by making the left side of the embankment a modern fence for the drove road. It consequently Stands much higher than the original mound on the right side, and has been formed by throwing up the soil from the interior of the ditch, which has the effect of widening it considerably. The greatest width here from top to top of the mounds is 23 feet, but the general average is from 14 to 17 feet, while at the bottom it ranges from 5 to 7 feet wide, its depth being from 3 to 4½ feet. On Woodburn the uniform width from summit to summit is 12 feet, at the bottom from 4 to 5 feet, depth from 3 to 4 feet. From Northhouse to Doecleuch its appearance is somewhat similar to that on Woodburn, but occasionally wider than 12 feet, being in one particular instance 20 feet. I have no hesitation in saying that on Woodburn and on Slatehills, the Catrail is nearly perfect as when made. Over [continued on page 12]

OS1/29/40/12 CATRAIL or PICTS' WORK DITCH Catrail Mr W.N. Kennedy Hawick W. Scott Esqr. Priesthaugh G. Oliver Esqr. Hawick [continued from page 11] Whatever the object of the Catrail may have been, it never was a continuous work. Time and tillage may have destroyed it in some places, as alleged by Mr Jeffrey, but in many parts of the route (I believe to the extent of fully one half of its whole length in this locality) it never had existence and I concur in the opinion generally believed in, along its route, that it was made only when no natural boundary existed, such as a deep cleuch or water course, which it invariably took when it lay in the line of its course. All of these, and the ascent up Whitehillbrae, are utterly impracticable as roads for men or flocks, and conclusively negative the fence and screen theory of Mr Jeffrey. As he has traversed nearly every inch of the Catrail, I would here recall to his recollection the break which occurs from Hoscoat plantation to Woodburn a distance of a mile and a half. At Hoscoat it falls into the Hoscoat Burn, takes the burn's course to the Borthwick, down that stream to where Muselee Burn enters in on the opposite side, follows it to near its source, where the artificial work commences and continues to Slatehillmoss, where another break occurs for about two miles; it follows the streamlet ie.Teindside Burn from Slatehillmoss to the Teviot, then down that River to where Northhouse burn enters on the opposite side, follows that burn for a short distance, where the artificial part recommences and continues to near Allan Water. Of errors common to Chalmers and his plagiarists, and to Mr Jeffrey, who did not Copy from his account of the Catrail, there may be mentioned the statements, that it passes Broadlee farm house, that after crossing the Allan, it is lost for about a mile, and that between Dodburn & Langside burns, it stands and descends the Carriage Hill - It is not visible on Broadlee farm at all, and its nearest point to the farmhouse at least half a mile distant. A British hill Fort, is close to Broadlee farm house which might have been mistaken for the Catrail by a person who never saw the Catrail. The above extract are taken from documents written by & in possession of Mr W.N. Kennedy Hawick
