The parish of Stichill lies in the County of Roxburgh, and Hume parish in Berwickshire _ they were united in the year 1640, but Parochial Registers have been Kept for both parishes since that time -
The parish of Stichill is bounded on the N. E [North East] by the parish of Eccles in Berwickshire, on the East by Ednam; on the South and South West by Newthorn, in Berwickshire; and on the North by Hume which as already states is joined to this parish for Ecclesiastical purposes _
There are no antiquities in this parish, the only matter of historical interest or rather traditional is as follows _ . When King James II went to besiege the Castle of Roxburgh, he left his |

Queen in Hume Castle; that one day when she was upon the road to visit her Husband, she was met about half a mile East of Stitchill House, by a messenger, with the melancholly account of his Majesty's being Killed by the bursting of a Cannon- This sad news brought on her pains; and she was immediately delivered of a child, upon a hill ever since Called "Queen's Cairn" is "Queenscairn Hill"-
The church which stands at the west end of the village Surrounded by a Grave Yard is at present in excellent repair, suitably furnished with Pews and has a neat Gallery. The average number of communicants is about 200- |

The Manse which was built in 1830 is a large roomy respectable looking building and in excellent Condition having out buildings a large garden and Small ornamental Lawn attached.
There are two Parochial Schools, one in Hume and one in Stitchil. The salary of the teacher in Stitchill is £25.0.0. and his School fees amount to about £20.0.0 a year and from other sources about £2.10.0 a year-
There is no portion of Stitchill within any other Parish. There is no portion of any other Parish within that of Stitchill. |

A small River or Water principally in the District of the Merse It rises on Boon Hill. Legerwood parish; flows first Eastwards, and then Southwards, dividing the parish of Earlston, from Hume and Nenthorn It suddenly debauches to the East, Separating Nenthorn from Smailholm, enters, & passes through Nenthorn parish and at this point becomes the boundary between Stichill & Nenthorn - after flowing again through a portion of Nenthorn parish it becomes the boundary between Ednam, Nenthorn and Kelso - it here enters the Parish of Ednam, intersecting in its course the whole parish, and falls into the Tweed 3 miles below Kelso
Its whole course is about 18 miles. the lower part of its course is very beautiful, being through rich & finely wooded scenery |
