ST BOSWELLS [parish] |
St Boswells |
The County Map |
008; 014 |
In ecclesiastical records, this parish is generally designated St. Boswells, but elsewhere it is more usually named Lessudden - In point of fact, the name is the name of the parish, the other of a Village, which occasionally gives name to the parish, as containing the great bulk of the population
The church is supposed to derive its name from Boisel, a Monk of Melrose, and Subsequently Prior of the Monestary -the pious master of the celebrated St. Cuthbert and, if not the founder, at least one of the earliest religious functionaries, of the parish -The Saint lent his name to a Village also, which seems to have been of Considerable extent in its day, but of which now scarcely one Stone remains on another.
This parish is of Small dimentions, being about 3½ miles in length, and about 1¾ in breadth - it contains ? acres -
It is bounded on the West, by Bowden; on the S.W. [South West] by Ancrum; |

On the East by Maxton, on the East & North by Maxton in Berwickshire and Melrose in this Co. [County]
His Grace the Duke of Buccleuch has recently erected a very handsome hunting establishment to the North of St. Boswells green, which forms the only modern building of a public nature, with the exception of the Church, deserving to find a place in this description.
The Church is Situated near the Eastern boundary of the parish, and Consequently three miles distant from the population residing at the other extremity: but as the population there is Scanty, and the great bulk of the people reside in the Village of Lessudder, or in the immediate Vicinity of the church, it cannot be said to be ... |

... inconveniently Situated for the great body of the people. From a Stone in the front, it would appear that the present church, which is Situated a little to the West of the Site, still discernable of a more ancient fabric, was built in 1652; although it is possible this Stone may have belonged to the former place of worship. The present building was thoroughly repaired in 1791, enlarged in 1824 & now forms a Commodious place of worship. It is understood to accommodate about 300 persons. There are not more than half a dozen of free Sittings, by which are meant Sittings set apart for the poor. In a certain Sense they are all free, Seat-rent being wholly unknown.
The Manse and offices were built in 1791, but as the work had been executed in a very Superficial manner, and on ... |

An area Containing about 40 acres of pasture, on which is held Annually, on the 18th July. (or the Monday following if the 18th fall on Sunday). "St Boswells Fair" one of the largest in the South of Scotland for the sale of Sheep, Lambs, and Wool
It belongs to various proprietors, the principal being His Grace the Duke of Buccleuch who receives the Customs accruing from the Fair -
Tradition Says that St Boswells Fair was long ago held in a haugh on the banks of the Tweed, East of the present Church, but that a high flood happening on the fair day, the Market was transferred to the present Green, and hence, perhaps, has got the Name of the plan formerly used for that Market. |

The Village of St Boswells, from which the Parish derives its name. Stood near the present Church, and Extended for the high bank to the East of it, to a Considerable distance West of the Kelso Turnpike Road, beyond the farm onstead of "The Temple". In the Statistical Account of this Parish written in 1834, by the late Mr Craw, Minister, he States that the plough in his time had frequently turned up the earth or foundations Stones of this Ancient Village. In many Gazetteers, etc, it is Said that a few houses near St Boswells' Green are all that remain of the Village is a mistake. The last house of it stood where now stands "Maxton Cottage".
