OS1/29/36/1 SOUTHDEAN [parish] Southdean Southdean or Chesters New Statistical Account of Roxburgh Valuation Rolls of Roxburghshire Blackwood's Map of Roxburghshire Johnston's Map of Roxburghshire 021; 026; 027; 033; 034; 039; 040 [Situation] On the South of Roxburghshire. The Name of this Parish is said to be derived from the district having been the Southern valley or dean of the once celebrated Jed Forest. It is sometimes designated Chesters from the circumstance of a Parish of that name having been annexed, - but which is now nearly obsolete. -- The Parish of Southdean is bounded on the North by those of Hobkirk, Jedburgh and Oxnam, on the East by Oxnam and Jedburgh (detached) on the South by Northumberlandshire and Castleton Ph. [Parish] and on the West by Hobkirk. Thereis no part of it detached nor is there within the limits here assigned to it a detached portion of another Parish. Its greatest length from North to South is 9 3/4 miles and its extreme breadth 6 1/2 miles. In the extreme South it tapers nearly to a point - about a mile northwards it suddenly expands and soon attains its extreme breadth - and over 4 1/2 miles at the north end, it has a mean breadth of only 2 1/2 miles. Its Area has been computed at about 27,984 Acres of which there may be about 4000 arable and upwards of 500 in wood. The Southern district is boldly hilly - runs up to the summit range of the Cheviots and has the whole or part of several bulky and lofty heights called Carlin Tooth, Neides Law and Carter Fell, - the Northern district is to a large extent upland and pastoral with interstices of arable ground. - Jed Water rises in the South-Western district and pursuing a North-Eastern direction it then traces the Eastern boundary for the most part. - The Parish is well watered throughout by numerous large streams and rills. The Newcastle Turnpike Road enters the Parish at its North

OS1/29/36/2 SOUTHDEAN Southdean [Continued] Eastern extremity pursues a North Western direction from which two lines diverge the main line continuing to the West side of Parish two lines again diverge running respectively West and NNW [North North West]- The only village is that of Chesters towards the North Western district which consists of about eight Cottages together with the Parish church and School. Patrons the Crown and Lord Douglas. Population of the Parish 850. An ancient Roman Road called Wheel Causey is still traceable towards the SW [South West] district of Parish. It is now used as a Drive Road. This road is said to have originally gone off from Watling Street to traverse Upper Teviotdale And at all events traversed the North east corner of Liddesdale and left Scotland at Deadwater to pass on under the modern name of the Maiden way through Severns Wall to the Maiden Castle on Stanmore in Westmoreland. Camps and Forts and the more modern Towers and the usual varieties of Strength and fortalice exist in great numbers throughout the district, respecting which however little is known beyond local tradition. The present Parish comprehends in the North West a part of he suppressed Parish of Abbotrule which was annexed about 65 years ago an the remains of the Church of which are yet extant also that of Southdean. The site of the last border battle termed Reidswine Raid as noticed in the Border Minstrelsy has been shown at the S E [South East] extremity of Parish.

This Camp is seemingly the remains of an Ancient British Town.
