The name of this parish is in ancient charters written Smalham or Smalhame - Smalham obviously means the little ham, the small hamlet or village: &c. Smailholm is plainly a modern corruption. It extends in length about 4 miles, and in breadth a little less than 3 miles & contains a little more than 6 1/2 square miles; the proper area being 4204 acres. It is situated in the North-eastern extremity of the county of Roxburgh; it is bounded on the North by the parishes of Nenthorn & Earlston on the West by the parish of Merton, all three being situated in Berwickshire - on the south by Makerston, and in the East by Kelso & a small portion of Nenthorn. In the parish there is one village which consists [continued on page 2] |

This tower has long been in a ruinous Condition, but has acquired an interest in modern times, from the author of Waverley having spent part of his infancy in its vicinity, (Sandyknow) & from having ascribed in a great measure, to that circumstance the peculiar character of his poetry - in the Minstrelsy of the Scottish [continued on page 3] |

[continued from page 2] Border, Sir Walter Scott, in a note prefixed to "The Eve of St. John" says it was in order to celebrate Smailholm Tower & its vicinity, which had been the residence of his infancy, that he had written that border tale; and in the introduction to the third canto of Marmion, while describing the influence of that early residence on his style of poetry, he alludes to the tower & surrounding crags. The parish church is very conveniently situated for the whole population; none of the inhabitants being more than 2 miles from the Church; the greater part of them are within 5 minutes walk of it. From an inscription (SOLI. DEO. GLORIA 1632) found on a triangular Stone which was taken down from the top of one of the doors when the church was under repair, it appears to have been built in 1632 - the Church has been frequently repaired partially; in 1820 & 1821 it was completely new seated [continued on page 4] |
