004; 005; 009 The name of this parish is in ancient charters written Smalham or Smalhame - Smalham obviously means the little ham, the small hamlet or village: &c. Smailholm is plainly a modern corruption. It extends in length about 4 miles, and in breadth a little less than 3 miles & contains a little more than 6 1/2 square miles; the proper area being 4204 acres. It is situated in the North-eastern extremity of the county of Roxburgh; it is bounded on the North by the parishes of Nenthorn & Earlston on the West by the parish of Merton, all three being situated in Berwickshire - on the south by Makerston, and in the East by Kelso & a small portion of Nenthorn.
