THE TROWS | The Trows. | Thomas Tod Stoddart Esq. Robert Kerss Thomas Noble |
009.07 | A very rocky portion of the River Tweed lying between the parishes of Roxburgh & Makerston about 3 miles about Kelso. The bed of the river is very irregular having many deep pools, each of which has got a separate name. The name Trows is a corruption of "Troughs," as Traughs at one time used to be naild or attached to a long piece of timber, a Traugh at either end placed transversely. this was used instead of a boat, as a man got into each Trough & held in his hand a lighted torch, and as he floated down the Stream speared the salmon. |
