Roman Road | Roman Road | Continued | [continued from page 59] and thence by the west side of Downlaw, over Lilliard's Edge, to where the road to Maxton Crosses it, near to which place the Roman Road & the Edinburgh & Jedburgh Turnpike coalesces with each other. For three miles and a half of this part of the Course, it forms the boundary between the parish of Ancrum on the one side, and the parishes of Crailing, Roxburgh, & Maxton on the other; it then stretched away by St Boswells, in the direction of the Village of Newton, where its Course was very discernible before it reached Bowden Burn. From Newton it then ran straight for the Village of Eildon where there was a station which is believed to have been the Trimontium of the Itinerary. |
