009.08 | The Castle & Town of Roxburgh, seem to have existed, during Saxon times & during the Scottish period of thee North British Annals. The Castle & town were portions of Earl David's apanage, and his favorite residence after his succession, as King. It was used, as a State prison, as well as a Royal residence, during the reigns of David 1., and his grandsons, Malcolm, and William, In 1306. Mary the Sister of Robert the Bruce was confined (by the English, in an Iron Cage within the Castle. Alexander III was born in Roxburgh Castle on the 4th September 1241. As the safe-guard of the border, it was surrendered to Henry II by William, the Lion, as part of the price of his freedom, but was restored by Richard in 1189.
