Harden [note]
Harden Castle Fullarton's Imperial Gazetteer
"Harden Castle, the ancient residence of the Scotts of Harden and a fine specimen of a border fortress, situated
in the deep narrow vale of Borthwick Water, 2 1/2 miles above the point of that Stream's junction with the Teviot
and 4 miles South West of Hawick. The lobby is paved with marble, the ceiling of the old hall is formed of curiously
carved stucco work; and the mantel-piece of one of the rooms commemorates the ancient noble title of the house of Harden by
bearing aloft an Earl's coronet inscribed with the letters W.E.T. the initials of Water Earl of Tarras." It was the Stronghold
of the notorious Wat of Harden the Border chief the deep glen which it overlooks having served as the receptacle for
the droves of cattle which that character swept before him is his nightly raids. It was originally strongly fortified. Vide
Leyden's Scenes of Infamy.
