007.03 | A beautiful castellated building about three Miles West of Melrose, and beautifully Situated on the banKs of the Tweed. Viewed from a distance the appearance of Abbotsford is Magnificent in the extreme, a perfect romance, in stone and lime, it partaKes largely of the Gothic and baronial type of Architecture, while it presents examples of the beauties of every style, combined and united in the truest taste, and forming in their Combination, a graceful and harmonious whole. A short Avenue with a gentle descent leads from the public road, to the entrance of the mansion. A large gateway leads into the court yard to which are attached a pair of jougs, or iron Collars, formerly used for confining criminals by the necK, bought from Thrieve Castle, the ancient seat of the Douglasses of Galloway. Passing under its portals, the peculiar appearance of the building is displayed, it is built of blue Whinstone, faced with sand stone doorways, windows, Cornices, and Ornaments; the colors of which contrast finely in its projecting balconies, and Castellated turrets.
