004.13 On the summit of a height above Gattonside, on Genl. [General] Duncan's property, beside a Trigl. [Trigonometrical] Station, surrounded by furze, is the site of a battery or Camp from which Oliver Cromwell is said to have bombarded the Abbey of Melrose; and from this tradition ,the eminence is called Camp Knowe.
