In this field there were formerly several round hills, bearing the appearance of tumuli, the greater part of which are removed by constant yearly plowing; previous to this field being cultivated, it was a wood, and the timber that grew on it was, of the description used by Cooper's for making Hoops, hence the name, "Cooper's Knowes" -
