001.12 | The remains of an old chapel, Situated in the Northern part of the Parish of Melrose - the walls are nearly levelled with the ground, and it would appear to have been of small dimensions. The interior has been used as a burying ground but there has not been any person interred in it for the last 30 years - It is supposed to have been a Chapel of Ease to the Abbey of Melrose It is called by the inhabitants about here "Chapel Croft" - "And the third, lying in the Northern extremity of this parish, (Melrose) was called CHIELDHELLESCHAPEL - The Chieldhelles Chapel was a handsome structure of hewn stone - The place where it stood, still bears it name" - Chambers Caledonia Vol 11 Page 179 - |
