008.02 A small Village about a mile East of Melrose on the rising ground forming the Eastern extremity of Melrose Valley; where it it stated by Chalmer's, and Camden, that the Knights Templars had an Establishment; but no remains of which now exist.
In the Vicinity of this village many Antiquities have been discovered, consisting of Roman Altars, Roman Pottery, an underground stone building, Well liKe pits, Gold Coins, and Animal remains
In the Village are a mixed School house, capable of Containing about 80 Children, having an average attendance of about 60, and wholly Supported by the inhabitants; two public Houses, Several small Grocers Shops, ad three pretty Cottage Houses; the remainder of the Houses are of a poor looKing description.
It is supposed by some Antiquarians that from this name may be inferred that an Older Steading Once existed here, viz. Red Abbeystead, and that this Steading was the Trimontium or town of theTriple Mountain, Consequently showing that the really Triple or Three peaKed Eildon, is the real Mountain.
