008.02 An arable field a Short distance to the E. [East] of "Newstead village, and remarkable for the quantity, of Roman antiquities which from time to time have been found in it, consisting of pieces of Samian ware, amphorae, and other pottery, tiles of red clay, querns, etc. Gold. Silver and Copper Coins were also found in this field from which Antiquarians have traced the dates that the Roman's inhabited and left this place.

008.02 An arable field immediately S. [South] of Redabbey Stead, in which was found A.D. 1830 a Roman Altar dedicated to the forest Deity Silvanus by a centurion of the Twentieth Legion. The inscription on the altar is as follows -
DEO. SILVANO - PRO. SALVTE. SUA. ET. SVORVM. CARRIVS - DOMINITI A NUS SLEC XX. V. V. V. S. L.- L. - M. "And it has been extended thus. DEO SILVANO. PRO. SALUTE. SUART SUORUM. CARRIUS DOMITIANUS. CENTURIO. LEGIONIS VICESIMAE VALENITS VICTRICIS. VARUM SOLVIT LIBENTISSIME. MERITO
