Thomas Tod Esq of Drygrange and Several others In Origines Parochiales Page 281 the following description of the boundary of this district appears "As the river Leder falls into the Tweed and thence upwards as far as the Burn of Fauhope (on the Ordnance Plans Flaw Burn & PacKman's Burn) which falls into the Leder and thence upward by the same burn and thence Across the Moor to the Raeburn" (On Ordnance Plans BlaKeburn)" which falls into the Aloent "(Allan Water on Ordnance Plans) and thence following the same river Aloent as far as the Tweed." Literary Gentlemen State that this name is derived from the saxon word "gate" a road and that the village is properly named was much as it is on the side of the Watling Street or Roman Way. - |
