008.01 This is an embankment, faced on the north Side, And Surmounted by, a Substantial Stone wall It was erected by the land proprietors of Melrose, to prevent the encroachments of the River Tweed at this place. It is on the South Side of the "Tweed" a short distance west of "Cowie's Hole"

008.01 A narrow Strip of mixed plantation Situated along a portion of the South Side of the Mill Lade, and about midway between "Melrose And "Newstead"; there was originally a large Wood near to this, bearing this name; but it has all been cleared away, And the land converted into arable: So that this plantation is called "Prior's Wood" merely to Keep up the old name, it being no part of the original wood referred to above.
