Beyond the dining room is a small parlour which Contains the valuable collection of Original drawings, by Blore, Culcott. Turner and others. In the Court Yard close by the porch of the Entrance-hall, is a Marble effigy of Sir Walter's favourite Dog Maiday over its grave, and bearing this inscription "Maidae Marmorea dormis sub imagine, Maida, Ad januam domini; sit tibi terra levis" Translated runs thus. "O Maida, thou liest under the Marble ring of Maida, at thy Master's door, may the earth be light upon thee"! Such is a SKetch of Abbotsford, the residence of the late Sir Walter Scot which stands unequalled in Britain, and which owes the whole of its beauties, to the talent and Genius of its late possessor, having by him transformed to a palace of beauty from its former unpoetic name Clarty Hole It is now the property and occasional residence of J. R. Hope Scott Esq. |
