ROMAN ROAD | Roman Road | Continued | [Continued from page 33] After leaving Risingham, it takes a Northwest direction for about 8 miles when it arrives at Rochester, the "Bremenium" of the Romans, occupying a pass in the Cheviot range of mountains After leaving Rochester, it bends straight north, and makes for border line, at the head of the Coquet, passing Holehouse, Crossing Thirlmoor, and, by Gammels Path, reaches Chewgreen, the "Ad Fines" of the Itinerary - at which place the Romans had a Camp 1000 feet Square From "Chewgreen" it bends to the East round a mountain Called Brownhartlaw, and from thence proceeds northwards on the back of the range of hills which send down their Streams into the Cayle, near the Hindhopes, on the West of Blackhall Hill & Resby Fell, [Continued on page 35] |
