According to Chalmers in his "Caledonia" the original name of this parish signifies the town of Machar or Michar, who is supposed to have possessed that portion of Country which forms the parish of Makerston.
It is bounded on the west by the parish of Merton; on the North by the parish of Smailholm; on the east by that of Kelso; and on the South by the Tweed and the parishes of Maxton & Roxburgh.
It extends in length from East to West between 3 & 4 miles, & in breadth, from North to South between 2 & 3.
The Church and Manse were built on a new site in 1807, near the centre of the parish.
An excambion of the Glebe took place at the same time (1807) the extent is 22 acres, and the value may be about £1.5.0. per acre
