The name of the parish of Lilliesleaf is plainly a corruption of Lilliescliff, which appears, from record, to have been the ancient appellation. Some of the Cliffs, which form the rugged, and steep banks of the Ale Water, near the site of the Village, received, as doubt, the name of Lilliescliff, from some person, who cannot now be traced. It is bounded to the North, by Bowden & Selkirk (Part of); on the West, by Ashkirk; on the South, by Wilton; on the South East, by Minto; & on the East, by Ancrum. This parish seems to have had its full share in the predatory warfare of the borders, from which it is distant at the nearest point about 12 miles. of this, the number of Fortalices, [Continued on Page 2] |

Forts, or Towers, which had been erected, bear ample evidence. Various individuals of great age, who died within the last 17 years (from 25 to 42 years ago) stated, that in their recollection, fourteen of these Towers or Forts existed, the far greater part of which were situated in the Village. But the largest Tower or Fort was at the Eastern extremity, and seems to have been the principal and strongest defence of the place. It was Situated on the highest part of the ridge upon which the Village stands, and, from its being two stories in height, must have Commanded a Very extensive View. Its defence would also be assisted by a Pool & Morass, on the South, by the [Continued on Page 3] |

River Ale, and the Steep ascent on the North, while the lairds of Riddel would furnish support on the West of this largest tower, the only remains about 60 years ago, consisted of a part of one side, which was off great thickness and strength, and of stones, which shewed that its form had rather been an oblong than a perfect square. It might easily have contained 100 men within its walls. There was also a Tower or Fortalice at Chapel, about a mile Eastward, which was taken down about 31 years ago, situated in a convenient station for watching & warding,& furnished with loop-holes for guns, arrows, or missiles; which narrowed the inside, and gradually widened outwards.

New Statistical Account
Fullerton's Gazetteer
Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Gourlay Minister |
014.09 |
The largest "Tower" of "Fort" in the parish was at the eastern extremity of the Village. It was situated on the highest part of the ridge upon which the Village stands, and from its being two stories high, must have commanded a very extensive View. Its defence would also be assisted by the large Pool and Morass on the South, by the river Ale, and the steep ascent on the North - of this largest Tower, the only remains about 26 years ago (51 years) consisted of a part of one side, which was of great thickness & strength, & of stones, which shewed that its form had rather been an oblong than a perfect square. it might easily have contained 100 men within its walls. |
