KELSO [parish] | Kelso (Parish) | Continued [from page 3] to have been erected, & to have had each its separate Church, at a period antecedent to the foundation of the Abbey - The Kelso Ch. [Church] of which little is Known, was dedicated to the Virgin, given to the Monks and burned down - The Church of St. James's was situated in St. James's Green, existed from 1134 till the beginning of the fifteenth century, when it was reduced to a ruinous Condition, probably by fire - The last of the three churches, that of Maxwell or Maccusvill, was dedicated to St. Michael; but the date alike of its erection & demolition is unknown; though the Cemetary of the parish still remains to indicate where it stood - [Continued on page 5] |
