Kelso. 22d July 1712. The whilk day John Penman officer in Broxbarony received ane halbert in order as ane of His Grace the Duke of Roxburgh's Officer to attend in St. James's fair and in all Courts holden in Broxbarony or Faircross in testimony where of the said John Penman signed these [present]
From this formal recognition of the Baron Officer it appears, that a village or suburb. of FairCross existed in the vicinity of Brox-law and St James's Green where the fairs were held; although there is not a vestige of such a place remaining yet it can with good reason by suppose to have existed in the vicinity of this Ana or Island which thus obtained its name.
