009.08 | The site of this bridge is about 3 chains higher up the River than the present Bridge that was erected in 1800-3, for £18,000. The two remaining abutments are of well cut freestone red & yellow blocks, mixed. In ancient times there was a bridge across the Tweed at Roxburgh Town now Mr. James's green, but at Kelso there was only a ford, near the site above mentioned. (The sites of the Roxburgh bridge and the ferry at Coble hole are in the 25 Inch work.) The passage near where the old bridge stood, a short distance above the present bridge was a ford for Carts and Cattle from Maxwellheugh village, from remote times, until 1754. There was also a ferry, with a landing place near ovens wynd. |
